You may be wondering what I’ve been doing for the last half year. Well… except for the work (boring, as usual) I’ve been learning python&django and… developing a new niche social network. Here is what it is all about…
Allow me to introduce Filmaster — a new social network for movie fans, with personalized content and recomendations. And all that free as in beer and as in speech. Interested? Read on!
General description
Filmaster allows you to run your own film blog in a great domain you.filmaster.com, rate movies and talk about movies with people whose opinions you care about. Personalized recommendations are a nice bonus.
Why create Filmaster?
Filmaster does not aim at competing with “market leaders” like IMDB or RottenTomatos. It is rather an attempt to create a niche Internet society of movie freaks, who require a differnt kind of website that Flixter (a movie site for MySpace users) and who are interested less in the latest and greatest and more in… simply good movies regardless of the release date and originating country.
More on the features
Filmaster has an advanced movie “rater”. Each movie can be rated in many categories like directory, screenplay, special effects or creativity. Basing on your rating and ratings of other people like you, Filmaster recommends you movies you haven’t yet watched but should. It also tells you which users’ opinions you should care about and which you can dismiss by showing you the estimated common taste in percentage points next to each user.
But Filmaster is not just about rating and recommendations. Before anything else, it’s the community. Blogs run by its users are accessible via special subdomains like myblog.filmaster.com. The most popular entries are promoted to the main page, based on the votes of other users. And all the posts are available in a special place called “The Filmaster Planet” which simply agregates blog posts, short reviews and forum comments on a single page.
The presentention of the content is also highly personalized. You can filter the entries so that you only see those made by people with a similar movie taste or your comrades (aka “friends”). Similarily, the rates and short reviews are filtered on each movie page, so that you can see the entries you care for most at the top of the list. Those are the ones that indicate whether you should watch the particular movie or should not bother.
Technical details (but important ones)
We believe in freedom of content and code. That’s why we release all the Filmaster code (that is mostly django and python) on a libre AGPL3 license and allow anyone access our code repository in a read-only mode (more on this subject soon!).
All the content is published under Creative Commons Attribution license to allow free distribution and modification of anything our users create.
